Sixteen-year-old Keegan is struggling to keep her huge secret from her friends—she's an elf, descended from a long line of elves that live in secrecy alongside humans.

In elfin society, mates are predetermined but not allowed to meet until they are eighteen.  Against tradition, Keegan's brother Thaddeus told her Rourk's name because his visions warned him she'd need Rourk's protection, especially since Keegan will play a key role in the coming war between the dark and light elves.

Rourk finds himself drawn to Keegan's side every time she thinks his name. He wants to talk to her but remains in the shadows, silently guarding her every time she mentally beckons him. A twist of fate thrusts the two of them together when Rourk is forced to step up his protection and make his presence known.

An ancient prophecy deeply entwines Keegan's family and the future of their society. Somehow they must find a way to thwart fate and win the battle...without losing Keegan. With war brewing, and dark forces aligning, will Keegan and Rourk ever have the life together that they both desire?

Coexist Keegan Chronicles Series Book 1 eBook Julia Crane Kadri Umbleja Cheryl Bradshaw

Crane weaves a believable story following Keegan, an elf, and her chosen, Rourk, as their species faces a longtime feud between the light and dark within their world.

Taking place in a world where magical creatures live within the human world, Coexist takes us to a place where soul mates are real, with the idea that there is only one perfect person for an elf, which happens to be chosen by the elf elders. Keegan lives her life in ignorance, because her parents have spent her life protecting her. Her world suddenly changes when truths are revealed, and she must come to terms with reality and learn to live in a world where everything she thought she knew was a lie.

The story was a quick read, and I’ve always enjoyed discovering new worlds within the human world, so I knew I’d like Keegan’s story. I loved the family aspect of the story and how relatable each character was. I also liked the special abilities each elf possessed, and wished I got to learn more about them—especially Keegan’s. I’ll be interested to see how the series continues and learn more about Keegan’s gifts.

If you like soul mate stories, you’ll enjoy Coexist. While the bond between Keegan and Rourk was formed long before they met, it didn’t feel like instant love. There was more to the story than their love, and it wasn’t all consuming like some would think. It gave the story balance, rounding it out as a tale of family, friends, love, and a battle of good and evil.

What I didn’t like about the novel was that the ending felt rushed. While the beginning was drawn out, there was a lot of time jumps toward the end, which left me unsatisfied. The timeline could’ve been condensed to help the change in pace. Also, there was a lot of buildup to an anticlimactic ending, and what I felt was an important scene was underdeveloped. I craved more and was slightly disappointed at how abrupt the action was. I still liked the story, though, and I look forward to the next book.

If you like young adult books about good versus evil, stories of family, special abilities, soul mates, and self discovery, Coexist is perfect for you.

Coexist Keegan Chronicles Series Book 1 eBook Julia Crane Kadri Umbleja Cheryl Bradshaw Reviews

This book was a delightfully fast paced read that thrusted you into a modern day elfin society meeting a teenage elf named Keegan, her elfin family, and her not so human friends which instantly makes you wish that you were part of their world. Keegan is instantly likable and I enjoyed that she was not a confused distraught teenager but one that had great friends, enjoyed school, dated boys and had a strong bond with her family. Throughout the novel you learn what role her family is destined to play in the coming battle between the light and dark elfs and that in time she will meet her chosen, Rourk, the elf she is destined to be with for the rest of her life.

One fateful day Rourk and Keegan meet and when they come face to face I experienced, along with them, the love and calmness they feel in each others arms and wished that I was in her place. Imagine being destined to love someone for the rest of your life who you have never met but know they will make your life better and be the other half that completes you. The emotions expressed during this time draw you even further into the story and you become even more invested in the characters than you were to begin with.
I was left empty and shocked at the end of the book and I immediately had to start reading the sequel hoping it would quentch the horrible feeling it left inside me.

The author has an impeccable way of capturing a world within a world, learning along with the main characters that all is not what is seams. The book oozes love, passion, and courage. Julia Crane leaves you wanting more and she delivers with giving us two more novels to love! That I am greatly looking forward to finishing! If you crave mythical societies, breathtaking heroic men, strong family bonds, and romance with a striking ending this is your book!
Ok, so for the most part I really enjoyed this book. The story line kept me very interest the whole time, and it was a quick read, so there were never parts that seemed to drag on and on.

My problems with this book

1) There were parts where the writing became somewhat confusing. For example, words would be missing which made sentences not make sense. Also, this book was written in third person limited that changed perspective, which in and of itself is not a problem. However, it became a problem when the author would switch perspective without any kind of break. There would be a section from Keegan's brother's point of view that would have one paragraph from her dad's and suddenly it would switch to Rourke's. I kept getting confused by this awkward combination of third person limited and omniscient. In addition, because it was such a quick read, I felt like there was a section that could have used a bit more. A big span of time elapsed and we were just told that time passed quickly. I would have liked a little more than that, since to me, that did not really go with how the characters had been reacting prior to this.

2) For the most part I really like Keegan. She seemed like someone who would be a lot of fun to hang out with, and while I applaud the author for giving us a different type of lead from the typical divorced parents/one parent dead, poor, socially awkward girl, I thought it got taken a little to far at some parts. There is a fine line between well off and relatable and just spoiled rotten and annoying. For the most part it was fine, but the line did get crossed a couple of times.

3) The ending. I have absolutely nothing against cliffhangers. However, I did not like the way she left things between Rourke and Keegan. I will not say any more than that because I do not want to give anything away, I will just say that I really did not like the ending.
